This mark just above Liberty on a 2006 lightly circulated Lincoln intrigued me. I’m looking at this and thinking, well, that could just be a heavy scratch, but could it also be a strike-through of a small wire shaving? How does one tell the difference? What are the “tells.”
But aren’t strike-through all recessed? Die scratches are raised, but that’s a different type of error.
There should be no metal that is raised above the surface of the coins field at ether sides of the line. The shape and form of the abnormality on your coin makes it look like an Struck Though Thread, which usually comes from a rag used for cleaning.
That was very helpful. I believe that is correct. No raised ridges of metal. I shall examine it again further tomorrow to reconfirm. I knew something looked different. I use a 60x scope when roll searching and I see scratches all the time, but they had a different look to them than this one. It really leaped out at me as being different somehow. I just couldn’t put my finger on why that was.
It seems there is a consensus. This is very gratifying. I almost tossed this one back. Many thanks to all who commented. I especially enjoyed seeing photos of similar strike through error coins held by others. It is always a pleasure to be able to enhance my knowledge of these errors.
