I found a 2005 West Virginia state quarter that is all silver it is noticably lighter than a regular quarter and makes a different tone when struck. Is this common or not and if not is it a good collectors item?
I would say it is very likely you have a silver WV state quarter. Another way to distinguish a silver quarter from the clad one is to weigh it. A silver state quarter should weigh slightly heavier at around 6.25 grams versus the 5.67 grams a clad issue would weigh. I hope this helps. Since it comes from the San Francisco mint, it was probably originally from someone's collection as these quarters were only issued as proofs. It is odd to find, but I have found a few S minted quarters in circulation. Consider yourself special if this one happens to be silver!
