i noticed that my canadian five cent coin has a "p" on the obverse. i looked in my krause, but i didn't see anything mentioned in it for the 2005. however, i noticed that the 2002 had a "p" listed, but no explanation. what is the distinction of the "p"?

"Plated"- In 2000 the mint issued 5 cent coins struck on multi-ply plated steel blanks. "The process is acid based and electroplates a thin coating of nickel, then copper, then nickel again to a steel core".- From Charlton Canadian Coins 2009.

And just to add on to what iKandigg said earlier, the main reason they were issued is they were meant to be used as test coins for vending machines. A few leaked out, and collectors paid big premium for them, so the mint continued minting them with the "p" on the coin.

i know that and i think that the one on our coins now does her justice but still shows her age where as the canadian one makes her look like your crazy old nan who always knits you jumpers and emits strange smells
