2005 nickel missing nickel layer?????

    A "nickel" is not a clad coin so it can't be missing a "layer". Actually there is more copper 75% in a "nickel" than nickel 25%.

    Looks like it is actually corroded with something.

    Agreed.. environmental damage. Probably been in the ground for a period of time.

    Coins left in the ground turn a dark brown over time, plus depending on the type of soil its in....... so basically your dark nickel to most collectors is worth only face value ...... plus your dark nickel is not a 2005 ...I cant tell by your picture but the date range is 2000 to 2003

    Yeah it's a 2003 and yes been in ground or else....Funny story I had a nephew whom swallowed a nickel as a kid...... Well long story short ....after it made the exit ......and being in stomach acid a few days....it was solid black. He did choke on it and his older sister hit him to dislodge it however instead of it poping out his mouth it went south ..... so my sister got to play find the nickel so she new that he passed it. :eek:ld-guy-smile:

    Oh shoot foiled again...... Just called my sister and told her to stop feeding the kid nickels ......:biggrin: thought I had the market covered ......
