Looks like the buffalo and bear are losers. The CCAC recomened an Owl/peacepipe design and a view of the Pacific ocean.
They did recomend the new right facing Jefferson for the obverse.
We might get a Buffalo on the Kansas State quarter.

Well look at it this way, at least it is a change. Anything is better than nothing.

Wow....this might not interest anyone...but that picture looks EXACTLY like my grandpa. Every face muscle and wrinkle. That stern face...everything but the hair. Wow!

Would that be considered a 25 year change? Someone please explain the rules about changes, obverse, reverse, etc.

Excuse me if I am off base, but this is what I read in one of the rags.

2004 and 2005 will be "commemerative" coins, similar to the SQ program that has been going on. These coins will follow the Westward Journey through the 2005 timeframe.

It is thought that a likeness of Jefferson and Montecello will return for 2006.

    My $0.02

Yes Jefferson and Monticello are returning in 2006, although it may be a different design from the Schlag we are used to. The 2006 and forever thereafter will be Jefferson and Monticello.

    The answer to Bromacs question:

The treasury has the authority to redesign any coin after 25 years without congressional approval. The last treasurer stated publicly that he did not feel he had the power to change such designs without congressional authority. I guess he was right. After the mint made its mind to change the five cent coin, Virginia stepped up and got the congress to pass a law stating that Jefferson and Monticello would have to remain on the five cent coin forever. Despite the fact it has been on the coin since 1938. Since collectors did not make their collective voices known, we have lost our five cent coin. There are plenty of people who like the fact Jefferson remains, and they have very valid points, but for collectors, overall change is good.
100 million collecting because of the state quarter program can't be wrong.
Until the annoucement was made for the new Jeffersons, all I ever sold in that series were the "War Nickels". Now I sell more rolls of Jeffersons than State Quarters.
Just goes to show you what a design change can do.

I concur with ND -- at least it is a change!!! I like the new one better, so if we are stuck with TD on the nickel for the forseeable future, I'll take the design change.
