Greetings all ! Just joined the forum and wanted some experienced coin experts to weigh in on this coin. I found this coin in change ( I work at retail and look for old silver coins ) and the edge appeared silver ...upon closer inspection its a P 2005 Minnesota State Quarter. I don't think its silver because it doesn't have the silver luster but I do believe it may be all nickel. What do you guys think ? Is this common or rare ? put it on a scale in grams. then look up a silver and platnium quarter on how many grams it is.

I just don't know if its silver for sure. Usually silver coins appear shinier than standard quarters and this one appears to be of that same standard shine..albeit with non copper edge...but I don't know for sure..

a thin coat of some other than what its made of, for instance silver. it is silver but not solid silver just plated with it.

Yeah these things were plated with silver, platinum, and gold and sold by places like HSN. Basically garbage stuff.

    There are no platinum quarters.

The only platinum coins were made in Russia, 19th century

tho, it could be plated as platinum

It looks plated. I quick, cheap common trick to fool others to part with their money. It could also be a clad with the missing copper edge but I highly doubt it. It could be silver but I don't think so. Weight it and look up the weights. I'm sure it's just a common plated clad quarter.

There is no weight information for a platinum quarter since they weren't made. At the same time, it is unlikely that you will find any weight information on, either, a clad or silver quarter plated in platinum since the thickness of the plating can vary widely.

The only thing you can compare the weight to is a clad quarter. The Philly Mint did not strike any silver quarters.

Does anyone else recall HSN, Coin Vault or Franklin Mint plating clad quarters with silver? I don't!

oh pick me! pick me! I got this. I actually bought a 4 quarter set for $1.25. someone told me that it was HSN, or QVC, or one of those shows that were selling them. one is silver, one gold, one platinum, one diamond plated. I have almost a whole page of silver plated and a whole page of gold plated. ALL found in rolls. I think I was told that it is applied with a SUPER thin layer done with a laser. it is so minute that it has no premium over face. some people dip coins in different precious metals to try to pawn them off as a rare error. I also found these gold plated 2005 D bison nickels in rolls too.

They plated millions of state quarters in silver, gold and platinum. I have a couple of dozen of each that came in estates. They also did the same to President dollars and sacs.
