What could cause so much damage to one side, but not the other side?

Looks like it was face side down in a parking lot or a road, the side against the pavement got "road rash".

if you drop a coin on a sidewalk and step on it and it slides.
    What side(s) get damaged?

The surfaces in question would be:
    (a) Shoe .. rubber sole
    (b) Concrete surface

Why does anything need to get damaged on both sides?

if you scratch your glasses, does it automatically gets scratched on both sides?

Along the same lines of what the others have said, just try to picture a coin under a car's tire in a parking lot. The up side will (comparatively) be protected by the rubber tire while the bottom is pushed/driven/scraped into the pavement/gravel.

If you're interested in errors (or varieties)'please don't be afraid to experiment, even if it means ruining a number of pocket change type coins in the process. Doing so really can be an enlightening and worthwhile experience.
