Well, my first Grandchild has arrived! I want to do something very special for her- put together a collection this year for her, that I can add to over the years. I envision her having enjoyment looking at them over her childhood and then doing as she pleases once she is an adult. Hopefully she will think of me too. I already have several items purchased that I want to include and some items I'm not sure if I should. I'm looking for advise on what to include in this first year set and what else should I purchase. Secondly, when should I give the set to her. A) Hold onto the set until she is old enough or B) Give the set to the parents to hold I want to include: 2005 Silver ASE proof and unc. 2005 Proof set 2005 Gold ASE 1/10 Unc. $100 Star note 2005 Bison mint rolls Should I include: 2005 Silver quarters set 2004 nickel/medal gift set 2005 Silver Proof set when available 2005 Mint set when available 2005 nickel/medal gift set when available I'm open to and comments or suggestions. I am a newbie (as you can probably tell) with limited resourses. Thanks, Jblaine10 Jeff
i like ur idea and u save it because my parents were given a coin and they had it forever before giving to me and thats because i asked them if they had anything!!! Make it a nice 2005 set not 2004 in my opinion include the nickel/medal set mint set P and D rolls of Sacagawea dollars (they might not be around in the future) and a 1905 Morgan (100 years back coin)
Great suggestions Spider! I have the Sacs already! Like the Morgan idea- will have to go shopping. THANKS Jeff
I would hang on to the collection until she's old enough for you to give it to her and be able to enjoy the look on her face when she receives it. Five or six years will do.... and it will always mean more to her that way as well..
We started a 2002 birth year set for our little guy when he was born and have received coins dated 2002 from all over the world. It helped that I was currently trading for the Euro but none the less collectors everywhere were, and still do, send the 2002 dates to us. I would add anything you chose to the set and hope that some day your grandchild will realize the value of what Grandpa and Grandma have done. The more you put into the set, such as older American classics, will enhance the value 10, 20, 30 or more years from now! Who knows what could be lurking in any new rolls you might stash inside this time capsule. Have a good time and do hope you are there the day your grandchild finally takes possession. One other thought-----hold onto the capsule yourselves until you are content with what you have done. It will mean a lot more for you to someday to hand those items over to your grandchild personally, if you can, as there will then be no question where they came from and that few minutes of memories will last a lifetime for all involved!
Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement!! Jeff I've decided to work on this rest of year and on Dec. 31 the capsule is sealed until she is old enough. Grandma and Grandpa will hold onto. This also gives me time to get those classics together.
You might also consider a few world silver bullion coins. Great Britain (britannias), Canada (maple leafs), Mexico (libertads), Australia (kookaburras), China (pandas). If you want to see (or buy) these coins, here's a source: Silver Eagle Coins
Good luck Finding the 1905 morgan. They stopped minting them in 1904. 1921 was just to introduce the peace dollar.
I would also add the: 2005 Mint Set 2005 Silver Proof set any 2005 Comm. I would also add a few notes on how to hold coins...why not to clean coins...why you are doing this and also add a Red Book. If I think of more I"ll write again. Speedy
To be honest, it sounds a little like overkill on the sets. I would try to limit them. A 2005 set won't look much different to her than the other (Mint, proof, siolver proof). Also, the $100 bill seesm excessive, but that is just me, perhaps. I am not sure it will hold it's value like the coins might, and that $100 bill mnight buy her a cup of coffee when she finally opens the capsule. I would aboslutley put in some foreign coins - silver euro commems, normal euros, some coins from countries that will join the euro in the future (when she gets the capsule, some of these coins will be obsolete), etc.
I could be wrong but I dont think they made a Morgan in 1905. Edit: oops, someone beat me to it hehheh
Hi jblaine, Nice gift for your grandchild! I have an almost three year old- buying coins for him and for my godson is part of what drew me back into numismatics after many years away. Personally, I like the silver proof set- may or may not be more valuable in the long run, but I like the warm glow of silver. Numismatically, I think the commemems from 2005 are a nice addition- proof or uncirc, your choice. That gives your grandchild a complete type set for 2005, except the bullion coins. To get all of them is nice but very pricey, obviously. My personal choice if money is at all limited is to get the ASE- they are the prettiest, although gold is nice as well. I also like the idea of 100 year old coins- those are what I got for my son and godson. 1905 type coin in gold are fairly reasonable to acquire if they fit your budget- could get a double eagle in MS (or whatever denom fits your budget), and get a 1905 lewis and clark $1 commem or barber halves in o and s mintmarks. Personally, I think that would be neater than getting every variety of bullion coin or mint mark for 2005, although mint sets are relatively inexpensive as well. Don
SFDukie has a good point...you could get the 1905 gold coins and not get the 2005's. It seems to me that the older coins with lower mintages will be worth more than any of the newer coins with billions.. Speedy PS--Nice to see you around here SFDukie...!!!
Strange........My first Grandchild was born on the 26th and I was thinking of doing the same thing. I was going to include 2005 world coins also. I like the idea of a 1905 coin.
A cicrulated 1905 set would be nice. Indian, V Nickel, Barber Dime, Q, and half. Not sure if any of the barbers are key dates of not....but the Indian and V should be very reasonable. - James
I too was thinking of putting away some coins for my two grandsons. Both were born last year. I looked at the proof set and about gagged with the price. oh well, will get it when I can. Great ideas guys. JD
