I received this today as a toll payment. I noticed it had a 'blob' (circled in red) on top of the panhandle of Texas. Very clear to the naked eye - even more pronounced under 20x loupe. The rest of the Texas quarters I've seen have never had this blob. Is this worth anything more than 25¢?
It's a die chip. They're pretty common on many of the SQ's, and it would have to be fairly big to add any value to it. Given the condition of your coin..........25c. Chris PS. Welcome to the neighborhood!
Thank you. I'm glad I found an outlet for some of these weird coins I've received. Nice thing about being a Toll Taker is the amount of potentially valuable coins that are passed on a daily basis.
If you want to see a lot of die chips on SQ's, get a few rolls or bags of the UT quarter. The locomotives are loaded with them. Below is my favorite proof error. It's a die gouge on the KS bison. Chris
Nice - I get a lot of the KS quarters each day - though no proofs. I did get one with the "IN GOD WE RUST" die grease error - the first T is very faint and if held in a certain way the T totally disappears.
Chris, a cud occurs when the edge of a die breaks off so coins struck with the broken die will have an unstruck "blob" that includes the rim. The two most misunderstood - and most misused - terms around here are "cud" and "doubled die". Following close behind are "error" and "variety". I am getting a headache just thinking about it.
