I recently bought three rolls of 2004 silvereagles from a reputable dealer.

In all three rolls all the coins had a frosty halo type finish to them where the center portion of the coin was shiny but the edges where frosted. This was only on the obverse the reverse sides were basically all same shiny finish.

I have bought a few 2004 earlier this year and was recently given one as a gift and both of these did not have any frosting on them.

My question is were these individual coins handpicked and therefore have no frost or did I just get a bad draw of coin quality in the rolls?

Also from your experience how many rolls do you need to go through to get a MS 69/70 quality coin?

i have 3 rolls of 2004 eagles too, only 1 is opened though and no problems with that.

i assume any roll that aint been touched nearly every one
should make ms69 and the odd one ms70, though dont realy know i havent submitted them

    HIGHLANDER,

I had a lot of problems getting the coins out of the tubes. I assume that you can't have many small shiny nicks (stars) to be a 69 and none to be a 70.

Not a chance. MS-68 yes. Out of 3 rolls, you would be incredibly lucky to receive 1 MS-69 from NGC or PCGS. Dealers routinely submit thousands of Eagles. I will include a Link to the NGC Pop report. Even though there are thousands in the grade of 69, does not mean that these are common. Hundreds of thousands have missed the mark. Now if you choose not to believe, go ahead pay $28 to find that your coin is a MS-68 and worth $10
