Hello All. During a recent roll hunt I came across a 2004 P Florida State quarter that appears to be silver. Since I am very new to collecting I get excited easily. Can anyone tell me how to tell... weight? mintage? anything that would confirm whether it is or is not 90%. Thanks.
Weigh it. When the SQ's were introduced, the TV hucksters came up with the grand idea (scam) of plating the lower grade P&D quarters with silver, gold and platinum and selling the sets at exorbitant prices. When the suckers realized that they were being sold a "bill of goods", a lot of these coins were dumped into circulation at face value. Chris
Well, if it's a P-mint, it won't be a silver proof that escaped its set and got circulated, so I dunno. Maybe there's something to what @cpm9ball said. Maybe it's just a weirdly-colored clad quarter. Again, I dunno. Properly-lit clear photos might help. I suppose the weight could also be good information to have.
TV Coin Retail Made to Sell shows sold both silver and gold plated sets of state quarters to unknowledgeable consumers. As stated above, once the state quarter hype died, many were spent by the buyers. I have pulled 3 gold plated quarters from change to date.
Gold plated quarters I've seen aplenty, but silver, no. "Why?", one has to wonder. Seems pretty pointless to me.
There are ads online for Proof Sets that are 90% silver. This may be from one of those sets? Getting some good scales this afternoon and will put up some photos soon. Thanks for the help.
