Does any know the release date on the L&C Coin and Currency Set. The set with the pouch(s) is being released on 9/7/04, but I have not yet seen a date on the coin & currency set that is sold out at the mint. Thanks, Jim
Well once again the US mint after the fact limited orders to 10. Since we have learned this lesson before, each employee plus myself, plus the company order the limits. Now comes the interesting part. How many will actually show up, and how many will get bumped off the list. Many dealers are already taking orders at $140 per set. So this series will be hot. At least for now.
Yes, I put my order in the first day ordering it was available. When I received my proof L&C Silver Dollar in the mail last week, they also included a note on the bill that read the L&C Currency Set was B/O. It was also B/O per the mint automatic email reply the day I placed the order. I am not sure if this means anything or not, or if they tell everyone the same thing. I only ordered one for myself, so I may not get the set. Jim
If the mint sticks to normal proceedure, the small orders get filled. That has worked that way in the past.
Interesting. How did you know that the L&C C&C set would be a stellar seller? I compared it with the Legacies of Freedom set which is flat in sales, the Euro set ...dido. I saw nothing special about this C&C set -no matte coins, nothing numismaticly different and yet its a sell out! Seems the US Mints boutique-coin offerings are hard to predict. So, why did this set explode in sales and demand??
All of the C&C sets have done well. Some have been big hits, some have just done good, but it seems that any C&C set is a good bet.
That was my next questions regarding C&C sets -thanks. Any thought on the pouch and proof set? I think $120.00 is pretty steep and really falls under the "boutique" category -rather than numismatic value, not that this is bad -I think the idea is quite neat -but again...$120.00??
Some series you can see being a big hit. When you watch the market, you can forsee some items. It isn't an exact science. This particular set is big because of the new designs coupled with the anniversary of the Lewis and Clark exposition. Everyone is excited with the new nickel, and it just came along at the right time.
The Pouch set? We have not ordered any. If that gives you an idea of how well I think that will work.
I just wanted to point out something. My use of the word "bet" is exactly that. When you purchase multiple of these sets with the hope to resell, what you're doing is speculating. My philosophy on that is that I never put more money into it than I can afford to lose. I'm not planning on buying any of the pouch set because I think it's too big a risk. I can also say for sure that I've bought stuff from the mint that hasn't done well, and I've passed on things that have done very well. If you're just buying one for your collection, go ahead without hesitation. If you're buying a bunch of them for speculation, be sure you can afford to take the hit if they're not popular.
I wish that we could afford to speculate. Most of the time, we have to buy to satisfy the needs. Some I do make a stand on. These pouch sets, are not a good idea in my opinion. I have not had any customers at this point request one. That is a good indicator for us. I would like to go along with Peter's suggestion. Collectors should not speculate beyond their ability to lose. It doesn't take much to end upside down in this business.
