Hello all, Could anyone kindly give me some proper info on this coin please. It’s got a copper looking finish in one side, and the other is your normal look. What has caused this and is it common, or rare? If it is rare is there any type of Monetary value? Thanks.
Neat. That looks to be a Missing Clad Layer on the Obverse side. It usually occurs only on one side depending on how the blank planchet lands in the chamber determines what side with the already missing clad layer will be struck. Excellent find. There's a premium but no set value. I've paid up to $100.00 for TPG graded and attributed examples.
I know why you stated that but in my honest opinion that is not always reliable because coins could have a weight variance of plus or minus to begin with. It actually looks legit to me. It's also the proper copper core color.
Not necessarily. I would depend on which die is the anvil die. It looks like a missing clad layer to me.
I didn’t phrase that very well, but I meant: Would a picture of the edge confirm the layer to be missing? Please explain why the anvil die is dependent, please and thank you. I agree it does appear to be a missing clad layer coin…Spark
All, Sorry for the delayed reply. It seems you’re waiting for the weight 4.68 is the weight. Also would you like a pic of the edge? And thank you all for your replies
I am looking for my type 2 quarter blank. I was wrong, the striking plays no part in the look of the sandwich on the third side. I was thinking all wrong last night.
“No worries, ‘mate”…this is why we bounce things off each other. My thinking was a good close-up of the edge would be able to show the presence of the obverse layer or not. The weight should be closer to 4.00 grams if the layer is actually missing so… Yes… @David Handlin …please provide an edge pic, obverse up…Spark ( courtesy tags @Heavymetal @paddyman98 @Rick Stachowski )
