    Speedy,

according to the US Mint, their total silver bullion sales were 9,617,000 oz.

That is also the number of 2004 Silver Eagle "coins" sold.

    Too many minted...

Guess they will always be a coin equal in value to melt rates, unless you have a 69 or better coin.

Not necessarily - those numbers often include coins struck with the previous year's date and sometimes the following year's date as well.

So in other words the 9,617,000 coins could have some 2003 and 2004 dated coins??
This is already expanding my knowledge by researching ASE...thanks

Well Ed--I might as well tell you, my name is Jim........ :D JUST KIDDING!

    Thanks (I think) ;)
My sister thinks you're right and one of her friends has seen Jim and agrees (kindof)

To get back on topic--even MS69 coins have problems and are not always the best...NGC has graded one (I forgot the date) a G-4..a ASE at G-4

I happen to have a MS-69 and my dad has a few more of last years date and some of them have milky spots and I do believe it hurts the grade--What I have read is that the spots come from the washing of the coins and just start to show up later after striking.
So even a MS-70 might not be a good idea as I would much rather have a MS68 without the spots than one MS70 with spots
I wish that I had gotten a roll of 96's but instead I got half a roll of 95's  --I sold them last year as they had been miss handled and were full of fingerprints..I sold them after silver went up a little so I still made $2/coin.

What in the world happened to an American Silver Eagle that would grade out at G4? These coins came out in 1986!?! And why would anybody submit a SAE in such bad shape for grading?

SAE 's are almost pure silver and silver easily tarnishes and reacts to a number of "junk" in the air.

I never heard of the washing, but I find it very interesting because it does make sense. I will keep an eye out as I watch my SAE's.

It must have been a pocket piece and was worn down to almost nothing.
I'll like to find a photo of it.
    Also....
Sometimes on Proof ASE you will see what looks to be a milk spot but its not really...someone while packing it might have coughed or breathed on the coins and in time spots start to form.

Yes they could & often do. It could also have some dated 2005. You see - the mint actually starts prodcution of the 2005 dated coins in Dec. of 2004. They also make sales of the 2005 dated coins to the approved distributors in Dec. so that they can be offered to the public early in Jan. Also - if there are any of the previous years coins still left over in Jan. - they can be sold as well. And I'm not positive on this, but I don't think they differentiate between unc & Proof sales either - but just lump them all together.

So you see how it works - sales numbers are just that - sales numbers, not mintages. But they do give a pretty good approximation until the actuall mintage numbers are released.

Ah..thanks GDJMSP---are the actual numbers the ones in the Red-Book? and other books like that?

Yes - the numbers in the Red Book and on that web site are actual mintage numbers. As a general rule, the mint does not release the previous year's mintage until late in the year following.

    Speedy,

Read today in Coin World that the final 2004 Silver Eagle mintage was 8,882,754.

Also of interest, 2004 mintage of 1oz Plantium coins was only 7,009, lowest in its history.
