It looks like the coin came in contact with some foreign object which allowed a chemical reaction to occur much like we might see when a fingerprint is left on the surface of a coin. Chris
I cant tell from the pics but the only 2 things that come to my mind is 1: Environmental or Post mint damage or 2: a struck through, # 2 depends on if the coin has that in the design and you can see it or feel it in the design or if it looks like its a stain on the coin. Sorry thats the best I could come up with without better pics.
My wild guess is it spent some time on a boat. Fishing net with a high sulfur content in the thread was laying on it.
