That isn't entirely accurate. Yes, they were required by law to strike the coins, but the law did not require the Mint or the Treasury Department to put them into circulation. I wonder how many bags are still sitting in Treasury vaults? Do you remember the 2001-D Kennedy missing the clad layer that I posted in your introductory thread? Well I did not exactly mean in sets but I mean they had to be bought in bags as you said or they were for collector purposes
Most of those you see in circulation probably came from bags & rolls. Collectors would buy these searching for high grades, varieties and errors. The rest of the coins were dumped into circulation. Chris
NIFC halves are fun for a date collector, as they are much less common to find. They may also be considered to have slightly more value, due to their lower mintages.
