Hi everyone. The right side of the 2nd 0 in the date is kind of interesting and misshapen. It seems to be a bit flat on the right side of the 0. Does anyone have an idea as to what caused this? My first thought was that there was a small strike through, and there is something going on around the 3 in the date that looked like a strike through impression. Looking closer at that anomaly by the 3, I can see that is raised and not incused. I think a clash mark is unlikely right there. It's probably a linear plating blister. There are no signs of damage, so the metal was not displaced by a hit. So, my educated guess would be that the die was somewhat over-polished right there and took off a bit of the right side of the 2nd 0, making that side flatter. What do you all think it is? Does anyone agree or disagree?
It appears to be a die deterioration issue. The 2000’s cents are known to have debris filled die issues in the date area.
That's what they look like, they're a tiny bit flatter on that side. Do a Google image search and see.
I just posted another 2003-D and noticed in the last picture that the 2nd 0 also had that flatness. Maybe this was just part of the design?
Definitely interesting. Thanks for the input! So I guess it is just part of the design and nothing out of the ordinary. Were you saying that a worn die could cause the flattened side of the 0 in the date or that it could cause the weak date anomalies (which I thought were grease-filled dies). Is die deterioration related to filled dies? I've noticed some weakness on the last digits of the dates on dimes from the 2000s, but never known about the cents.
