I have a 2001 R.I. "P" quarter that appears silver, I have heard of the edges sometimes getting rolled and that makes the coin appear to be silver. I weighted it and it weights what a clad should. I looked at it through a digital mic-ro scope up to 400 power. and see a faint copper color. Is this a error coin? Thank you for your time. Mike
It is most likely silver plated. Ever since the state quarters began there have been companies making silver plated, gold plated, and platinum plated sets to the quarters. The TV shopping people have sold a TON of them. When the buyers decided to sell them to reap their profits, (and a lot of them have since the series ended and their sets were complete) only to learn that the quarters are only worth face value. This has resulted in a lot of these plated coins being spent or just depositied in the bank. (The secretary of one of our local coin clubs was getting change for his business and he was given thirty dollars face value in gold plated quarters.)
Horse on Me! LOL! I opened the thread to see a Rhode Island Quarter where only the "P" looked like it was silver!
