    Welcome to the neighborhood!

Since you don't have photos yet, we won't be able to help you. Perhaps you should have made a post in the Introduction Forum, first.

It couldn't be the Holy Grail because it fell in the chasm before Indiana Jones could reach it.

from your description you probably have a coin that has been in a fire. heat will change them to about any dark color and cause the nickle plating to come loose and form air bubbles pushing the outer plating up.

I will get some picks it's really strange coin! I am not a collector of errors, only Perth mint silver and Canadian silver newly minted. But if it's worth $500 love to turn this quarter into AG. The fat bump is so large hard to believe mint would not see this. Back is killing me so pictures coming later. I did search 2001 Quarters and there where few errors that popped up in New York p mine is D. Looks like blob metal below Statue of liberty, does not affect other side coin!

Yup, until the pics, I'd say what you described is gonna result in a PMD coin. Even if it does turn out to be a real error, I can tell you one thing, it's likely not going to fetch $500, more like a few bucks over face value. If the bump isn't too big and the coin still fits through a vending machine coin slot, that's where I'd likely be putting it to buy a tasty snickers bar.

Without pictures, theres not much to say. But If I had to guess, I would say it was caused my extreme heat.

like most of us thought it would be , your coin has been in a fire. now that world trade center fire is not the only fire we have ever had. this can even happen when coins accidentally get in the paper trash and get hot when the trash is burned. LOL

Try getting a little closer to the coin next time you take a photo of one. ;)
