I got this coin the other day and noticed 0 Clad showing it does have a grove in the reeds, however it does weigh in differently from all the other state quarters I tested. State quarters showing clad came in at 5.6 grams and this came in at 5.8. The 5.8 is under the 6.1 silver states should be. So I'm thinking its plated (but why) or maybe a different planchet. What do you guys think?
Plated - no doubt. Not silver Why? Any number of reasons - boredom, class project, and in all probability, it's from the tens of thousands (or more) Plated quarters sold on the TV marketing shows. Official weight is 5.7 grams, and 5.8 would be the plating.
why would someone silver plate coins? https://www.merrickmint.com/24k-gold-plated-coins.html gee, there's lots of companies out there that take current (and past) us coins and silver, gold or other various plating of them. Then resell them and make a lot of money. ==> https://www.usmint.gov/news/consumer-alerts/consumer/colorized-and-plated-coins or for novelty items . . just peruse this too ==> https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr...ers.TRS0&_nkw=silver+plated+quarters&_sacat=0
I found a Tennessee the other day with the same odd line in the center of the reeding. Thought it was a magicians coin but it isn't. Not sure why it is there? Any thoughts besides damage?
