2000d nickel reverse missing letters

    It's hard to tell from a straight on shot, but it appears that there is an indentation in the coin where the letters should be. My guess is that this was a defective planchet. A low area in the planchet that did not fill in under the the pressure of the strike. However it could also be from grease on the die.

    This would be correct... or just damage since there are lots of circulation hits on the surface.

    Looks like a surface lamination that has broken away, leaving a concave area.

    (I sold the Spring Nickel on the left,
