Got this coin in a handful of dollars, saw the mark and saved it. Looks like a blemish and some veins running through it at about the size of a dime. Anyone care to take a stab at this? DSC01212.JPG

It looks like damage or it could have been a person messing around with it.Not a mint error though.A better pic would help.

B12, Thanks for the answer, I'll try to post a better picture. It's not damage because the mint impression is over the affected area. It looks to me like an imperfection in the metal itself and it was stamped right over it but I don't think my camera will pick that up. Sorry I can't show the detail.

Show both sides. The obv will help narrow it down. If it is a struckthrough it is pretty impressive and might be worth some $$.

It looks like a thin layer of dried glue.

    ???????????????

    C'mon mikediamond,
I wouldn't waste everyone's time with a glue spot. But thanks for the input.

I does look like it could be glue...but damaged none the less.

    Speedy,
I know you can't really tell from the pictures, but it is not glue. The mint impression goes over the affected area in some spots and the coating on the coin goes all the way inside the veins. If it was damaged there would be visible evidence on the coin and I can see that there was no intentional or accidental damage done to the coin after the mint. I guess what I'm wondering is if it would be worth getting it checked by ANACS. Thank you for your reply.

    Better picture

I just used my scanner and now you can see that the mint mark E PLUREBUS UNUM goes right over the mark. sac004.jpg

I suppose it could be an unusual strike-through error. Is the spidery design recessed? Are the design elements that intersect the spidery design muted or mushy? Both would be consistent with a strike-through error. It's really hard to tell what it is without a magnified image.

    mikediamond,
Yes the veins are recessed, pretty deep too and if you look carefully you can see a flat spot at the center of the pattern of veins right above the US in PLURIBUS and again sorry I can't get a clearer picture but should I send it in to ANACS, would it be worth it? Thanks again.

The obverse looks good,so I don't thinbk it is stamped post-mint.

Could be engraved, but you can see that better than us.

I would be inclined to send it is if you do not suspect engraving.

    JBK,
No, it's not engraved. I actually do that for a living, so I would know. I think I will send it in to ANACS and forget the cost. I do wan't to thank you, you and everyone for your input and advice. This is a pretty cool site. Thanks, Wayne

Make sure to keep us posted - this would be a great error if real. Very dramatic.

Not sure if I would spend the money on having it sent in for authenticating first. If there are any coin shows or coin stores in the area, take it there and ask what they think at a close up look. Make sure you say you don't want to sell it so they'll give you an honest opinion. Usually if you say you want to sell it a dealer will say it's worth a few dollars. From the photos it appears the material was defective prior to making the coin.
Nice find. Wonder if there are more like that out there?
