Looks like it took a nasty ding. Although I am not a gouge expert. Great color on that dollar though!
Either a strike-through or a ding - closer examination of the coin would be necessary to determine which of these it is... But it's definitely not a die gouge. Die gouges are impressions in the die, so when the coin is struck, the gouge would show up struck in-relief (elevated, like the devices) on the coin's surface. I'm actually leaning towards strike-through (which is a mint error - not PMD like a ding would be) on your coin because the recess in the surface looks uniform and fairly consistent. If it were a ding, I'd think the outer-most edge of the impression would cause metal displacement or "bend" portions of the inner edge of the impression... But I'm no expert.
Hmmmmmm.....horse of a different color then. Doesn't look like any die crack I've ever seen. Hopefully some knowledgeable folks will chime in again.
to me, this looks like the feathers were... cut off... not material over them... and I also believe there is some slight damage to the star. I'm leaning toward ding.
this one is simple , if it is a sunken in place with a raised ridge on the edge of the sunken in area then it is a ding from something hitting it. If the entire area is raised then it is a die gouge. the coins a few folks calls the extra leaf quarter and the speared bison nickels are good examples of die gouges and there are hundreds of different type coins being found with large die gouges.
dollar if this is a die gouge it would look exactly like the photo looks. when something damages the coin die it sometimes removes the design from the die in the damaged area. photos can be very deceiving and it would be nearly impossibe to identify some errors from just a photo.having a coin in hand to examine is the best way to know what is wrong with the coin..
