Is it an error? If so what is the correct labeling?

    A little background:
I ran into this coin on eBay. As you can see in the original listing below, the images were blurry and there were no bids. It was only $1.99 shipped so I took a chance. I told my wife, "I probably just blew $2 on a coin that has probably been altered, but if not it could be pretty cool." Well the mail just ran and it was here. I was hoping it was a struck through die cap or brockage or something along those lines. Upon opening, my first thought was PMD. I took it out of the 2x2, and there is a tilted partial collar associated with this coin. That made me think there may be some hope yet. What do you folks think? I'll get some close up images if you need them. Thanks all!

because of the (seemingly) unevenness of the planchet from the obverse, I'm thinking hammer job.
I have something similar I may post later.

I hope someone wasn't dumb enough to mess up a perfectly good partial collar, but if so, I was expecting it.

Does the reverse bulge in the middle or does it look normal?

Looks like it was struck through a late stage die cap.

    Agree with jallen.
Seller didn't know what he had and if he would have put the correct description in the listing he would have gotten a lot more for it. Good find!

That is what I was leaning towards, but I have only found one & it is through a very late stage cap (thinnest of die caps). Are they common with a combo of partial collar. If the partial collar & full rim wasn't present, I would have thought a dremmel tool got it.

Oh, I forgot, thanks Jody & d.t. for confirming my thoughts on this coin! Taking a chance pays off sometimes!

jay if someone did this with a dremmel tool and ground off this much metal the thin copper plating would have been gone. nice find

When I found this 1970s almost a year ago, I figured it was a struck through coin. But since then I've questioned the strong 70sgreaser.png crack on the bust. It's the only cent I've found with a crack in that area. I've worked sheetmetal with hammer and dies and know when the metal is worked too much, it spider cracks, especially alloys. Never knew about die caps until this thread and what I read in LRC about die caps. Could this be one also? The only thing else to question is if it is a capped die, then how do I have raised area under LIBERTY and the raised trails from Lincoln's head?
