My wife showed me a 2000 lincoln penny that looks like any other lincoln penny with one exception. The outer edge of the penny is in a different metal as it appears like a nickel or aluminum color??? How can this be?

    Should I get it certified?

Maybe it was scratched or painted? Do you have a picture?

What rolltide means by his saying it may be scratched is this - cents are made of zinc and coated with a very thin layer of copper. So if the edge od the coin were scratched - the zinc would be exposed. Thus the color you see.

It is not valuable and no you should not spend the money to get it certified.

    no scratches

I am having trouble uploading thepicture. There are no scratches nor was it filed...a perfectly smooth edge. the edge is of some other metal than copper.

Occasionally the copper coating (it's too thin to really call it "plating") will wear off the edge, especially if it is even thinner than the specs call for. :(

    You are all correct

I took it to a local dealer and he said the outer edge did not contain the copper and the zinc was exposed. He did not know if it was a mint error o if someone filed tdown, he thought it was an error. He thought the value would be around $4.00.

The other coin I showed him, he was very excited to see. He had not seen one yet. It was a territorial coin 1861 $5.00 Clark, Gruber. He indicated I should get it graded. Perhaps VG around for $2,000.

    I inheritedthis from my grandfather.

hello tiredmomxxxx and welcome to the forum. your clark, gruber & co 5$ gold coin could range in the prices of 1400 in vf condition up to 19000 in uncirculated condition. these prices are taken from the red book pg 302. is their any way you could post a pic so some of the more knowledgable ones on this site could mayby help you to distinguish what you actually have. they could also give you very good advice on getting the coin graded.

Maybe your pricing is correct but he might mean just a better one than the red book? It's a great book but it is all basics. I won't graduate from it probably for another 20 years. ;)

The red book is great for referrence, but the prices are usually not close.

I am in Texas today. Heading back to Delaware tomorrow night.

I have been looking for joesmom, but no clue what she looks like. I thought that I could spot the novice, but too many here today.

I did not come just to see her :D We just both happen to be attending the same show.

I worry about MS. After all the hoopla at the last show........

Since you are close to Florida, start looking there.

Pensacola has a nice little show in the middle of June.

Did you notice that this thread is almost 13 years old? You would be better off if you started a new thread and posted good photos.

Your Cent is worth 1 Cent.. The most important question you should be asking if it's actually a Mint Error coin!
