    Hello everyone,

Check out this cent, I would like opinions on how this happened?

Cent is about twice the normal thickness and tapers to the obverse, the obverse rim has no cladding on it. and you may also notice a pretty good crack through the 00 of the date.

    Thanks
    Rick

    Hi Rick,

A neat little error. Your cent was struck on a "thick planchet". My guess is the zinc is showing thru on the rims because the abnormally thick planchet was struck by dies set up to strike "normal" thickness planchets and that excess pressure caused a "finned rim" effect. The part across the date appears to be part of the finned rim that has partially broken away...
