I've noticed a couple of variations (or what seem to be..) on these nickles. The date in a few that I have seems to be wider and broader than the 'thin' font used on other recent years. Could this be anything? No mention of it in the Red Book. TIA :)
Ps. Tried to scan them, but I don't think that the scan would be of much help detail- wise... and no digi cam.

Oh, forgot to mention that the dates are so thick that the numbers are touching one another...

I have never heard of any reports of any die changes on the nickels. Sounds like you may have a coin that has been struck by a die that had exceeded it's die life, thus resulting in die deterioration doubling (which will make the elements appear fatter).
