I've noticed a couple of variations (or what seem to be..) on these nickles. The date in a few that I have seems to be wider and broader than the 'thin' font used on other recent years. Could this be anything? No mention of it in the Red Book. TIA Ps. Tried to scan them, but I don't think that the scan would be of much help detail- wise... and no digi cam.
I have never heard of any reports of any die changes on the nickels. Sounds like you may have a coin that has been struck by a die that had exceeded it's die life, thus resulting in die deterioration doubling (which will make the elements appear fatter).
