Looks like a genuine US one-cent coin, but I'll wait until the experts chime in.

When a poster is asking about a "color" of a coin, but it is photographed on something of indeterminate color, it is almost impossible to answer. The coin should be put on a piece of light gray ( photo neutral ) or plain white printer paper, and the camera's "light balance setting" set to the type of light, or if you have automatic color balance, follow the directiosn for setting it. Then we see a more accurate rendition of the color.

It also helps to place it next to a coin with a "normal" color so the viewer can see the difference

Here is one of my examples of a less known date

does your coin look like this in color?

    brass1.jpg brass2.jpg brass3.jpg brass4.jpg

    I know there are 1983, 1985-D, 1997, 1997-D & 1998

ken potters page on them http://koinpro.tripod.com/Brass.htm

mint says possible on any date from 1983-1998

the weight should be same as normal coin.

yellow has to have luster like example or is plated
