I need help!! As a young child I took a coin given to my father to school and lost it. It was a $20 coin celebrating the entrance of Alaska into statehood. I dont recall any other specifics about it but wish to purchase another one in order to suprise my father with a Christmas gift. I would appreciate any info one might give me as I know nothing about coins. thanks, Rob

it was not a U.S. coin, as the Mint's website has no record of either a coin commemorating Alaska's entry into statehood, or having a $20 denomination.

Liberia has issued many commemorative coins with the $20 denomination, but I can't find any record of one honoring the 1959 Alaskan statehood.

Perhaps it came from one of the other countries that issued what is known as "NCLT", or "non-circulating legal tender", which are coins having a nominal face value, typically sold at a premium to their metallic content value, strictly for sale to collectors; although that activity hadn't really gotten very well started by 1959.

    Anyhow, welcome to CT.

Chances are it was a token of some kind. Keep searching eBay and you mind get lucky.

I searched .... Alaska token ..and got several hits. None at $25 face value though.

What about the liberty dollars. I thought their silver rounds had $20 denominations?

What year was it when you were "a young child"? 1960, 1970, 1980?

    Do you remember any generalities?

Size - silver dollar size or the size of a dime?
    Color? - bronze, silver, gold?

I was 5 years old in 1980 which I think is about when I lost it. I do not know what type of metal the coin was but I want to say it was either bronze or gold. thanks everyone for your help.

It may have been something from here: http://www.alaskamint.com/
If so, you may be out of luck as they don't seem to sell things from past years too often.

They also don't seem to respond to inquiries about past items. I emailed them an inquiry whether they had produced such an item the same day this thread was started, and I haven't received any response.

It took them a while, but they finally responded to my inquiry. They did not produce the item in question, and don't know who did.

I couldn't find anything more. You may want to ask these people http://www.alaska.net/~nakata/coin_club.htm
at the Alaska Coin Club. I figure if anyone knows what Alaska coin you are looking for, it'll be someone from Alaska.
    Good luck.

Your not the only one who loses things in grade school

I was in second grade and took my father's indian arrowhead to school that he found while working on a farm when he was a teenager. I believe the arrowhead was stolen and although the value was probably under $100 the sentimental value was priceless. I can't believe that someone else posted a story similar to mine, so at least I know I'm not the only one out there.
