Oh, as you know a lot depends on the date and condition but I'd say $300 from the tone of your post Ben
BTW,it's a quarter eagle (1/4 of $10).The coin is a $2.50 piece.I'm sure you already knew that...but.
This is one of the most commonly counterfeited series of coins (in fact it is one of only a handful of series where a complete date and mintmark set of counterfeits can be assembled). Without pictures we won't be able to help you very much since we won't be able to tell if it is counterfeit (worth $5 or less) heavily circulated (and worth it's melt value), lightly circulated (worth a fair bit more than it's melt value), or uncirculated (possibly worth quite a bit). Also, unless you are an expert (in which case you would already know the answer to your question) you need to be aware that even if it is genuine, this series is possibly the most difficult series to grade, since it has incuse devices (the image is sunken instead of raised on the coin) and gold tends to retain it's luster even after circulation. The experts have trouble grading these in person, a layman would be nearly lost trying to grade one.
If the coin is real I have seen them at pawn shops and coin shows in good to very good condition starting at $200 to $225. There is a dealer who has one in quite nice shape but it is in a gold bezel and was a necklace once. That coin is $240 and it is in great condition. Depending on condition the price jumps up from there. I don't have any but want one very much. I saw a nice slabbed and graded 2.5 dollar Indian at my coin dealers for $750.
The one in my photo above would probably grade in the low 60's and I think I paid $235 for it two years ago.Have prices increased that much recently? You guys have made me wonder if I should submit it and double my money...what do you think? PCGS has them on a down trend probably tied to gold prices but the values posted are VF $190 XF $235 AU $270 MS60 $355 and MS 62 $675,this is for most years and mintmarks 1908-1926
Ads in the Coin World I received today have BU examples of the coin offered for sale for $235. Save your money Mik.
