Hello CoinTalk, I began collecting about a month or so ago. I began by simply finding a silver quarter in my change at work. I then went through all of my change I'd saved up and found another silver quarter and a few silver mercury dimes. Since then, bought a 1906-S Half Dollar. To my question.. I came across this coin, based on what I've found out... I believe it's from Spain from around the 1400-1500's. It seems ~bronze in color, not silver. Is it real? Is it a reproduction? Any idea about this coin? It's become available for me to purchase, but I have no idea what it is and the owner does not either. Been rummaging around the forums the last month, but I set up an account and I'm ready to begin becoming addicted to coins... ha. Thanks
I contacted the person with the coin, waiting on a response from him for a more clear picture. Never thought I'd be interested in this type of coin, but now I'm hooking trying to figure out what it is..
First, welcome to the neighborhood! I'm not sure that it is a coin. It could be a jeton or medal, but the photos are too blurry. Chris
This is the "Spanish" half of a two-piece set of reproductions, issued in 1992 for the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus. The other piece is inscribed in English, has Columbus on one side, and his 3 ships on the other. The Spanish coin is about 25c sized, the other is 50c sized. Both are struck in pot metal, not silver. They came in a plastic case with a sliding lid, about 3 by 4 inches, with a flocked maroon background and silver lettering.
doug444, Thanks for the response, I'm a little confused though. You're saying the one I showed is a reproduction from 1992 or you've seen a reproduction done in 1992 of this coin? Thank you for your help!
1 or 2 reales of Isabella I and Ferdinand. Spain, XVIth century. But I can't tell: is it genuine coin or copy? I think that it's a copy (probably).
Hey, wow good work! Looking up what you wrote, that's definitely the 'coin'. The one I've been offered for sale seems like it's in too good of shape for this age. See below is another view of a different coin found online: http://www.coins-auctioned.com/auctions/ancient-spain-l1-ar-reale-ferdinand-and-isabella-c270-1559
To clarify, your item and one other piece (picturing Columbus) were struck in 1992, as described above. The plastic holder says, "Spanish II Real / Coin of the Era / 1492."
I learned one thing here, it's easier to post a photo the first time, instead of explaining and explaining LOL LOL.
