    Hi all,
Just saw this neat Mint Error which is considered a Transitional Mint Error up for auction at the Great Collections website. It is a 1983 Cent struck on a Bronze Blank Planchet (Considered a Pre-1983 Planchet.. they switched to Copper Plated Zinc Planchets mid 1982)

Transitional Errors - When the mint changes from one metallic composition to another and a previous planchet with the old composition ends up getting struck as a new dated coins.

    Not my coin

With a little more than 7 days left until the action ends, so far there are 9 bids and it is going for $1,800.00

I will post the final bid price at the end of the auction (I'm not bidding :wacky:)

    @JCro57 - You Interested? ;)

Well, I would be if it wasn't struck through grease. I don't like those kinds of errors and it kind of ruins it for me.

The same goes for super rare dates that are errors/varieties. For example, I wouldn't want an off-center 1909-S VDB Lincoln, or a broadstruck 1916-D Mercury dime, or a transitional error that is a grease strike-through (but i would take an off-center transitional if it had a date attributed). Grease strike throughs just aren't my thing even for this piece.

The struck through grease is probably gonna hold the price down on this one. I agree with Jcro that I would like to see this coin with out the common struck through grease error.

    I've seen a Denver, I don't think I have seen a Philly. Good post.

When they call it a grease struck through is this because of the LIBERTY ?

Yes, and also because you cannot see the word IN. Notice that there’s no scrape or damage on the obverse and also that the reverse is more sharp. These are all indicators of struck through grease.

OK I see $2250 and 6 days left. Are we doing, a Guess the Final Price?
I will be in the $5000 camp. IDK if I agree with the grade. I realize the struck through caused the marks, but to me that still lowers the grade.

Is this the first Philly for this date as a TME ?
Like @JCro57 I don't care for struck thru grease
errors. With that said, if this is the first certified
TME for the date, I think some where around
    $10K will be the hammer.

Obviously not from a mint sealed bag, I wonder who was sharp-eyed enough to spot this one in the wild? Perhaps the grease filled parts first attracted his or her attention, and without that perhaps it would never have been noticed.

The condition may have been a factor, and the population increase?
The risk is, if a dozen of these turn up over the next few years what does that do to the value? Of course for collection purposes this is a huge prize. Perhaps the star of the collection.
