Sorry no pictures - but I found a very nice 1999s nickel yesterday. The only other proof I ever found was a 1959 nickel.

I often wonder about the many reasons of how and why they find their way into circulation.

Quite often, they are the result of not meeting the minimum grade for bulk submissions. Suppose the submitter requests that only coins grading a minimum of PF69UCAM(or DCAM) be encapsulated. All others are returned to the submitter unslabbed. The submitter then has the option of selling them raw, depositing them in the bank or just spending them.

I found a 69-S several months ago in pocket change and it looks like it has 5 full steps. I guess it's a proof, right?

Could be either or - there were over 123 million business strikes minted in 69.

Besides the luster, is there any other way to tell the difference between the Proofs and business strikes?
