Today I in my local coin shop, doin some cherry pickin for some walking liberty halfs and standing liberty quarters and buying one 2010 ASE. Well after paying and getting my change I get in my car and start looking through my change, Hello I find myself a nice shiny 1999-P Pennsylvania state quarter and the side is completely silver. Question is, I thought only proofs with an S mint mark was silver. Do I have a fake, something special, or maybe it was from a mint set or something? I'll try and take a pic and post it later if you need to see it.
The coin was likely coated in Platinum or Silver and sold for $10 on late night TV. I found one in change last year and found out where they came from. Sorry I don't have better news.
Yep it is most likely plated, I thought I found a state quarter struck on a some kind of incorrect planchet too, I sent it in to get graded it came back bodybagged. The coin shop most likely knew that this coin is worth just .25 cents and that is why you received it as change at that shop.
True, a lot of dealers when they get these plated quarters in from a TV coin show sucker will just toss them into the cash drawer and hand them out in change.
Ok, finally gots some pics, Even if it is fake I think I may keep it around for a bit. I feel like I want to clip a piece of it just to see but dont want to ruin it if it is real.
Yup, it's plated. Also a die crack coming off the Q in QUARTER? If it is, you could probably sell it on Ebay for $1 if you keep shipping to $0.50. =)
I don't know if that is a crack or not, but wouldn't selling the coin for a profit knowing that the surface is probably altered make him no different from all of the other SleazeBay sellers who rip people off? I think your computer privileges should be taken away from you for 6 months for even suggesting it. Chris
I in no way suggested you should sell it without disclosing what's been done to the coin. sheesh. Judging from the hundreds of thousands (?) of coins that have been sold that are plated in platinum and silver, there is a market for that type of thing.
Then you should be more careful how you word your remarks because they can be misinterpreted very easily. Chris
Ok, I understood what was ment and for now I have no intention of selling it, I'm more into buying at this point in time.
definitely plated, my guess would be platinum. i have a set of westward journey nickels that are platinum plated. and no i did not buy them from tv! a friend gave them to me, his late aunt worked for home shopping network and had pretty much everything they sold. after he found out they were junk he gave me a set of gold and platinum. i would just hold onto it, its only a quarter.
