    Hello,

I'm fairly new in the world of coin collecting mainly because I've had no time but now I'm ready to learn some things about coins, mainly my collection.

I bought several of the 1999 Silver Proof sets when they came out from the mint. Unfortunately, I sent 2 of these sets in to be graded and they both came back PR 68 which I thought was strange. I'm only referring to the quarters. Well, now the price of these sets are around $300.00 so I was hoping to convert them back to the original holder and red box. PCI did the grading and they sent me all the materials, plastic cases, cardboard holders, red boxes and description cards. My question to the experts:

Is it wrong and unethical to put these sets back together? I would reveal this to the next owner but they might not do the same if they were to sell them. I can't tell if these types of sets are glued together or just snap into place. Another question is: How would I handle these coins without marking them with prints, dust or any other imperfection?

    Your advice is appreciated.

    Thank you, Dave

I see no problem with putting them back in the case--some wouldn't even bother with telling the next owner but I think it would be nice.

With all coins you need to hold them by the edge (or rim) but with proofs I would also make sure that there is something soft under the coin so if you drop it it won't get diged up.

I would also get a can of air like they sell for computers to use on the coins to get any dust off.

Since PCI did the grading they might not even be PF68 as sometime they over grade.

I personally wouldn't call it ethical to reassemble Proof sets. If you wish to sell them - just sell them as they are in the slabs. I doubt it would make much difference in the final price.
