Due to a change in the die creation process, coins older than 1989 can not bear a repunched mintmark.

    Hope this helps!

If you look up when the last year mint marks were hand punched, it might answer your question for you. Modern methods have the MM incorporated in the die eliminating RPM's.

It's the result of mechanical doubling.

And, no, it doesn't always have to affect
the lettering or design elements near it.

ok isn't that the mechanical doubling what we are all looking for ? this is a mint error is it not? and still rpm or "dmm" than "double mint mark"

The one you are referring to in this picture was hand punched into the die. With multiple strikes creating the RPM with misaligned subsequent strikes.

In newer dies, the MM is engraved along with all the other features of the die eliminating all opportunities for any repunching. It would be in your best interest to study up on the process so you can understand what everyone is trying to enlighten you on in this scenario.

Mint marks used to be hand punched, not any longer or since 1989 so it is impossible to have an RPM after that date. There is no such thing as a flawless coin on a business strike made for general commerce. Even an MS70 coin may have a minute flaw. Mechanical doubling which is flat and shelf like happens when a die bounces or there is play in the coining chamber. These are not errors. Doubled dies are an error or variety if you wish, caused by a flaw on the die. These appear raised, not flat and may includes notches. Doubled dies have a premium but mechanical doubled coins do not. You can collect them if you want but they are worth only face value. A good read on all of these topics can be had by exploring www.doubleddie.com. John Wexler's site covers many topics including all I have mentioned. There is a wealth of free info there and hours of reading. As for "what the hell are we all doing this for"? Too learn and educate ourselves and sift the chaff from the hay.

thanks, really helpful info!!! I have been seeing a lot of mechanical errors, I have also caught on to the ghosting doubling where u see the double and move the coin and it's gone I caught this one early but this nickel just looked too much like the rpm ...... So I have one more pic it's a penny with a D tail the rest of the coin is horrible but I thought the D with a tail looked cool devils mits tail .jpg
