Going thru a coin collection and ran across an uncirculated Delaware State Quarter.. It's not the typical horse image. It has the state behind the horse and some ivory designs around the outside..
at 1st I didn't think it was legit, but it weighs & feels the same as the other quarters.
It also says "copy" in small print across Washington's head... (Bummed out about that, but maybe it could still be something?)
I can't find any information on this coin, so I joined this forum.. hope someone can help me out!:)

    Hi Brittany,

Unfortunately, it's a counterfeit, or replica if you will. US law requires that replicas of US coins be marked with "copy."

Counterfeit or replica is based on a real coin, this seems like a privately minted fantasy piece, not counterfeit.

I also found one not to long ago!!! It is a "Fantasy Piece" based on a rejected design submission for the 1999 Delaware State Quarter that was privately struck in very low quantity BUT in very high quality by Daniel Carr. It is a VERY RARE and collectible piece!!! Another nice fact about the "fantasy art piece", besides being struck in medal alignment as a beautiful deep ultra cameo, look along the reeded edge until you find the small plain edge section of it that reads...... .999 FINE SILVER!!!! You might want to put this piece in a safe place because Daniel Carr recently bought a coin press from the US Mint and has begun minting several series of Fantasy and Tribute Coins!!! They are VERY POPULAR among collectors and are highly sought after. And you just happen to own one of his EARLIEST art pieces he made!!!

We have also found one of these quarters. Ours is a bit different however, at the bottom where it says "Quarter Dollar" ours says "Tribute Proof" Does anyone know any information on this one?

I am not aware of Daniel Carr ever making this design. I am Aware of his 2001-2006 submissions, but never seen as early as 1999.

Not saying you're wrong, just saying I haven't seen it anywhere, and he doesn't claim it on his website like he does his other designs and mintings.

Also I happen to know Daniel Carr doesn't put "Copy" on his strikes. He stamps them over genuine U.S. coins and normally gives them a fantasy date if he's doing the same designs. if this was a design submission it wouldn't' have "copy" on it either, since it's wouldn't be a copy it would be his own design.

They may be silver proof copies. Check the edge for .999.

I have one of these. Exactly as OP described, but nowhere on the coin does it say "copy". I am looking for more information as well.

Actually just discovered the word copy in Washington's hair! Had to take a picture with my phone lol

If the word COPY is that small, it's still a violation of the Hobby Protection Act, which specifies the size that COPY has to be in order to be sold as a "replica" coin.

Copy is on Washington’s hair but this thread is 10 years old and was brought back to life 5 years ago.

It's understandable that they do a search and find an old thread, but I always do a double-take when I notice that the last post was a decade ago.

I'm surprised nobody tracked down where these came from after all these years.
