Chris - Thanks for reply. Yeah, have a new microscope and could only get this "negative" image to show what I wanted. Guess I need to learn diff between machine doubling and actual DDs, eh?
When new to something like this, it's always a good idea to set aside a few coins from each series to refer back on until you learn the curve so to speak.
I don't want it to seem like I'm picking on you personally, Robert, but the recent explosion of newb "error hunters" generally is frankly getting under my skin just a little bit. Trust me, and ask around, I have been ranting on this topic for over a year now. Somehow, word got out that this is the essence of the numismatic hobby, and it most decidedly is not! It is a tiny, tiny sliver of the hobby at best. Somebody seems to have given away a few too many Ken Potter books, and a few too many people have run off the end of the earth after reading them. There is way too little reading and studying (Books, not stupid websites - there's a big difference!) going on, and way too much magnification getting thrown at coins for little to no reason. In short, if you need big honkin' magnification to see your "error which probably isn't" (anything higher than the OPTICAL magnification of the digital scope you're using) it's not worth saving. (Digital magnification is not true magnification - it's artifact creation.) The ratio of post-mint damage to true errors, or strike doubles to true DD's, being put on this board by newbs approaches 1000:1. And it all can be avoided by learning a little something about the field before rummaging through $25 boxes of cents. There are scads of numismatic authors other than Potter, and better ones, too. The best five authors are all named Q. David Bowers, oddly enough. I could rant on this over two pages, but I'll stop for now.
Man, you are for the most part very nasty to newbies on here! Give us a damn break buddy. Just because we are not as AWESOME as you and have all the knowledge that you think you have let others ask away and learn instead of being bashed. This i'snt your own personal site, and i feel you have long been into this well before these sites were available, and you would have done the same thing to save time in order to enjoy the hobby. Most of us don't have the time to read hours on end of material , and great sites like these allow the busy folks to get into the hobby. I have seen you bash people for awhile now, JUST QUIT IT!
@V. Kurt Bellman Wow, you really did rant there. Whoever said that error/variety collecting is the essence of this hobby? Where do you come up with a 1000:1 ratio? And if it's getting under your skin so badly, maybe you need to take a clonazapam every now and then. Maybe it would be easier for you to just pass by these threads and not bash them. Error/variety collecting is NOT a tiny, tiny sliver of this hobby, It's alive and doing very well and has been since I started in the 60's. If not for folks like Ken Potter, John Wexler, Brian Ribar, Fred Weinberg and many others we all would not know nearly as much as we do today. And not every newbie has the finances to go out and buy a library of books when they are first getting their feet wet. Hence, the websites, all of them, are a very valuable resource that is absolutely free to use and persue in leisure. The whole reason for this reputable site is to help everyone who asks it of us. And as was said above, this is not your personal website. It belongs to all of us who are helpful, respectful and willing to pass our accumulated along on. Try to have a little more respect for those with less knowledge than you. And remember, there was a time when you knew nothing about this hobby also. "The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few, or the one" You are the one, we are the many.
Really? Check out the percentage of error dealers at any large coin show. Once you get past Fred and maybe one other guy, you're about DONE.
Sorry sir or madam, but numismatics, like nearly any field of STUDY, and that’s what it is - a field of study, requires COMMITMENT to it, to do it properly. I have a short fuse for the casual who feel we are a free resource. We “paid”, not only or even primarily financially, but with literally DECADES of study, commitment, travel, education, and self-discipline to learn our craft. For you or ANYONE (sorry, Tommy, this is how I truly feel about this) to expect that all we have learned is now open for free to all WITHOUT similar commitment, DEVALUES our many decades of study. I prefer to interact with, if not peers per se, at least those who desire to someday be, and exhibit a desire to make a similar commitment. I don’t like “shortcut takers”. And yes, to my way of thinking, the entire internet is one giant “shortcut takers’” paradise. We had free resources too. They’re called “libraries”, and last I heard, they still exist.
Your just a miserable person i think Just go somewhere else that has their members take test to discuss the hobby and newbies cant join. That should make you happy. JUST GO AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!
What’s YOUR area of expertise? The field in which you excel? How would you feel if I just showed up and bugged you about IT with no basis of core common knowledge? Yes, yes, I know - every bullion hawker on here is guilty of the same charge pertaining to monetary economics, but that’s a whole separate rant. Point is - the Internet has created more people with an overinflated idea of their own skills than any invention in history and we have an entire generation of people (millennials) with the most out of whack “skills to self-esteem” ratio ever. They are so loaded with self-esteem and so utterly lacking in basic skills, and I lay the blame SQUARELY in the lap of the Internet.
You can’t correctly use ‘you’re’ and I’m the mess? Time to recalibrate, Krd. Here’s some free advice: First, learn to write correctly in English. Second, stop at a coin shop or a book shop and pick up a basic coin book. They have one in the “... for Dummies” series and that’s made for people like you. Third, maybe then look for error coins. There, you have enough to keep you occupied for a while. Maybe eventually there will be one fewer illiterate calling me “a mess”.
Buddy your just a JERK!!! I have my books and have done the research. My problem is not error's or Doubled dies. Its the way you talk to newbies and treat them like crap. Just GO AWAY!!! My english is fine and my thoughts are clear you are just a miserable older man i hope that when others see this they will at least realise your not just picking on them but you are just a miserable mean person.
I prefer to call myself a person with standards so high that I often fail to meet them myself. I tick myself off when I do that, too, so maybe you can get over your hurt feelings. I am a self-admitted perfectionist with no desire to change that. I desire to interact as much as possible with my fellow perfectionists and not the intellectually lazy. I feel I’ve earned my right to have that preference.
I don't understand. He is only six years older than you. The difference between the two is he is obviously more mature.
