Depends on why it is missing - can you post a picture. Probably a grease filled die and no telling what someone would pay for it on ebay. But pictures would help confirm it.

Probably struck through (grease) as mentioned, a very common error really worth no premium unless the whole side of the coin (or both sides) are gone, even then it wouldn't be worth more than a few bucks in BU condition...

I have seen quarters missing IGWT too. I've been told the release of these coins were more of a test then a mistake. A test, to see who would notice vs. who would complain.

They are neither a test or any kind of mistake. They are as suggested coins that are struck through a heavy layer of grease. The grease fills in portions of the die and the details do not strike up. It is extremely common although some folks do like to collect them when a larger portion of the design is effected.

These have nothing at all to do with the design being missing from the dies.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Bill,
In giving absolutes neither of us can. Your take on what, when and how is only a an educated guess, just like mine is.

  8. I'm also going to say it's most likely a grease strike, I've found a few of them in change and in rolls. It seems like it is becoming more commonplace with coins of the last 10 years then earlier issues, but maybe the earlier ones have already been pulled out (I've only been looking in depth at my change since spring 08).

I save all of them I find, I don't care what they may be "worth" but I think that they are interesting.

I would also classify them as an error. It's not like the mint is purposefully putting grease in the dies...IE...an error. Your opinion may vary...

Being that your assertion is very unusual and sounds nothing like something the United States Mint would embark on, it would be helpful to substantiate your claim by sighting a specific source or sources.

Not a problem, let me do a little research and I'll post what I have been able to relocate. It's been a while since I heard about the IGWT missing off the quarter but I'll look.

I don't understand how anyone would think somebody would put any effort into making a fake penny. The amount of time and energy it would take to make just one then ya can't make just one because what's the point in that? I just think it's stupid to forge pennies even dollar bills, but the subject here isn't dollar bills it's coins. I realize they have machines to do it, but pennies? I mean come on.

Roberta cents are counterfeited in mass quantity's, whether it is to look like an error or variety, or even found and confiscated at ports of entry to be used as currency.
The above coin in the OP is most likely a mint product and just struck thru grease, or debri filled die.
