Need any information on this coin. I know it was struck, like a proof, but has a satiny matte apoearance and it was for the Botanic Gardens set. I picked this one up with pocket change. It has 4 FS. Impaired .

    I am confused
If you found it in pocket change. Why do you say it is for Botanic Gardens set?

It looks just like a regular 1997 nickel.

Your coin is not one of the matte finish nickels. It is a regular circulation strike coin and worth only 5 cents

The odds of a 1997 matte finish ending up is slim to none as only 25,000 Were minted. That's 5th smallest mintage since the 1941 proof mintage of 18,720, 1940 , of 14,158 , 1939 of 12,535 & 1938 of 19,365 nickels.
Plus it was only available in one set and the nickel is valued more than the entire set.

Actually it's only the one....not the prestige mint set just the uncirculated set. The 1994 nickel was like 167,000 minted, and only found in the 1993/94 Jefferson set.:pompous:

It looks like a normal nickel to me. Why do you think it's one of the SMS nickels?

I really didn't think it was one of the SMS nickels, didn't know, that's why I posted. I'm fairly new at doing this and when I run across a coin that could POSSIBLY be something good, I post it here on CT where knowledgeable people can give me the answers.

I was just making a statement of what I read about the 1997 P Jefferson.

No worries...I was just wondering if you saw something in hand that we might not be seeing in the photos. Sometimes photos can hide things. It's difficult to tell sometimes when someone asks a question like this if they are simply new and don't know the details of the coin...or if they are experienced and see something specific that might not be showing up in the photos.

The nickel has a matte proof finish and is distinctive when you see it.

The Mint only made 25,000 of these sets paddy, and they were sold by the Mint in the days before the website, so they were sold by mail at a limit of 5 sets per address.

I was one of the disappointed ones, but bought one on the secondary market later.

The coins are often found in NGC or PCGS slabs as MS-69 SMS.
