Friends here is one I found a few years ago. Just thought I show it. The scratches seem like Dye scratches to me. Too tiny and light to have someone do it. Could this have happened at the mint? Appreciate your thoughts and views? God Bless Beck
Someone outside the mint had a Dremel tool and a little too much free time. I have to ask, Mizra, do you have any idea of how coins are minted?
The damage, in my view, is too targeted to be a mint error. LIBERTY is scratched off, IN GOD WE TRUST is, and the date is. It does not seem to be mis-struck or defective, seeing the stark contrast between the damage and the rest of the coin. The profile of Lincoln is untouched and the memorial is clean. I don't see how any mint equipment (dies, collars) would just target these areas. As I look closer to the photo, there appears to be light scratching above the date and above and below LIBERTY, too. The scratching is also horizontal and vertical. I just don't see it as an error cent.
The scratches are so light and dimish that if a person was to do it.They would use more force to get the letters off due to they are made of metal. And the Scratches would be deeper. But, I appreciate your vote on the coin.Majority votes, its not a mint error.
I'm sorry but you are so wrong! Don't ask advice and then thumb your nose like you know better. This is damage, damage, damage. Nothing in the minting process would cause this effect! IT IS MAN MADE!!!!! Please educate yourself on the minting process instead of posting pic after pic of garbage! Phew, now I feel better! I said what everyone else wanted to say. Seriously, send it off and pay money to have it authenticated,
Lets closeup this topic. I agree with your advise. Not worth grading. Thanks for your advise on the coin.
Again, Mirza, I suggest you learn more about how coins are minted. When you find something like this, before posting it you should ask yourself 'could this happen during the minting process?'. With a working knowledge of the minting process you'd be able to determine that most of the time the answer is 'no'.
