1997 D Penny

    Do pennys have any other metal in them or just copper,reason i am asking is this one has what looks like steel around the outside of the coin[the ring]and comes over just a little onto the front and back of it.If needed i can post pics.Thanks

    Since 1982, cents are made of copper coated zinc. You are seeing the zinc where the copper has worn.

    Some of the copper plating has come off the zinc core.

    Current cents minted since part-way through the 1982 production run consist of a 99.2% zinc/.8% copper core, plated in pure copper. They are slightly lighter than the previous solid copper coins.
