Other than the coin being altogether ugly is it a close AM?

Yes it is a close AM, what are you looking for?
In 97s you would look for a double ear.
98,99 and 2000 look for the Wide AM, in98S and 99S proofs look for the close AM.

Look for wide AM;s not close. I do suggest for you to look for these AM in the morning not PM at night you won't find them at night.:crying:

What they are trying to say is that it is supposed to be a Close AM on a 1997. If it were a wide AM on a 1997, you would have something. This coin is normal.

    Thanks,
    Bill

I was looking at a few different coins and just wanted to check and see what it is I'm to look for. Do you have a photo of a wide am I can't find any

I agree, but also look for 1992 and 1992 D, Close AM. Try this site for more info. www.lincolncentresource.com/wideams.html

I was hoping it was a 1997-S...now that would be interesting. :D

Why is the 1997 S interesting?

Sorry--a 1997-S would be interesting if a close AM were found, that's all. ;)
But as far as I know...there is no such variety, but I'm always hoping somebody finds one. (I have found 1998-S and 1999-S close AM proofs).

What it comes down to is that error and variety collecting is both challenging and rewarding. Even when you think you have learned it all, something new is found. It is easy to get hooked searching for something new. Read all you can and ask questions. Once you have found your first "Big Find" you are hooked. Then "Welcome to Our World"

Looking for the close "AM", does it matter if it has the "D" stamp? In the Red Book it shows only 98, no "D"s. Are these included?

Yes, the only D mint that you need to look for is a 92 D Close AM, the others are P mint mark Wide AM's (92, 98, 99, and 2000) except for the 98 S and 99 S mint marks which are also Close AM's. You can find them all on this site:

On 1992 and 1992 D, you want to find a close AM. Wide AM's are normal.

I know you meant to type it like that Andy, I just didn't want this guy to get all excited if he found one :p

Are the 1981 no stamp suppose to be close am or wide am

Wide, and you get better results if you start a new thread and not tacking it onto a thread that died 4 years ago.
