I decided to buy a 1996 W Roosevelt dime for my collection as I only have the set in silver completed no clads , other than a few here and there mint sets proof set. I received the dime today in the mint wrapping from a dealer and here's what I got have a look at the pictures and tell me what you think the error is? On the Obv. it is a scratch like over the eye but each side of the scratch has a medal build up not like a true scratch. On the Rev. have a look at the E plurib there is a die clash? Running thought it....I hope the picture up load so you can see this . Thanks Paddy

Wow!! Now that's a lucky find, there were only 50,000 of those minted.

BTW Paddy, you may want to register with photobucket for free, upload your pics there and post some links here of your coins for bigger pics. :thumb:

The two scratches look just like two scratches to me. If I'm looking at the same thing you are, then it does not look like a die clash. The scratch over E Pluribus is on both the field and on the high relief. A die clash mark would not be on the areas of high relief. This is a scratch IMO.

I'm pretty sure the actual mintage of the 1996-W dime was closer to 1,500,000

Both the obverse and the reverse look like post mint damage to me.

Sorry no again as the scratch is in a gob of medal not on the surface...the rev is not a scratch but again raised medal notin the surface area! the coin is still in the US Mint packaging not post mint damage. At first I was a little upset as to the coin being not gradeable but the more I looked at the two areas I was convinced that it is some type of die damage.

Paddy, we do need larger pics. Fret mentioned photobucket and it would indeed allow us all to see a larger example of what you've posted here.....:)

BTW Paddy, it doesn't matter about your camera. Your pics are a certain size, when you load them on this site it automatically makes them smaller. If you go to an image service company like photobucket or imageshack.com you register for free and post the links on here, for free.

I know dang well, that dime you have has a nice error like extra silver, bad planchet or something. :D

Coins with Post Mint damage end up in various sets all the time. The coins are minted, they get banged up and they get packaged.

Even the packaging is done "Post Mint".

The obverse seems to be the result of a die chip and on a coin like the 1996 W dime, it hurts the value because people want as close to perfect examples as they can find. There is no premium for a die chip on this coin.

1,457,000 is the reported mintage and they can be found for around $25.00 or so. A little less , or a little more.

I circled the marks I believe you are describing. To me, the obverse mark looks like a contact mark and the reverse mark looks like a scratch on the coin or the plastic. If you say it is a die chip & a die clash, then it may be but please post better pictures when you can.

It was originally described that each side of the obverse scratch (or contact mark) has metal build-up. This could be normal because the metal dime material does not compress and must go someplace. Therefore, the material around an impact would be raised.

It is correct that coins may get minted, banged-up, and then packaged at the mint or by an outside contractor. I do not know where the W dimes were packaged.

Question Collect 89 how do you do it, or what program do you need to highlight the areas like you did on my picture of the 96W dime? I have seen it done many times but never asked how it's done. Thanks Paddy
