The top layer is peeling off. It is gouged and then looks like it was layered after the gouge happened. There is no damage on the edge of the penny nor any other signs of being scraped up. Is this a clad layering problem?
Just an average problem with these zincoid coins . Since the copper is plated over the zinc it tends to not stick properly a lot of times and either bubbles or peels away like you have . I wish they'd go to some better alloy or metal .
Haha, you said exactly what I was thinking about using better metal. I know it is of no value, but it is interesting with the gouge. The gouge appears to have happened before the plating. If you look to the right of the peeling, you should be able to see what I mean.
You mean those plating bubbles inside the memorial? It could very well have come from the mint like this, true. It almost looks to me like it got a really good whack from a tiny chisel or screwdriver. Anyway, this cent is in the process of disintegrating, because now that the zinc is exposed, galvanic corrosion will probably set in. A lot of 1943 dated cents got done in by the same process.
Well dang! I was maybe going to hold onto it just because I thought it looked neat. I guess that maybe I should just toss it back into circulation.
I see. I did look that up and it seems to be that lamination is what it is. Thanks. I can save it for reference and interest.
The plating issue, as is visible inside the columns, is insignificant and nothing worthy of any real interest. The anomaly to the left of the memorial though absolutely is. I cannot recall if this would properly be considered "laminiation" or perhaps a planchet issue, but is a genuine "error" nonetheless.
Yeah... I think so. You don't want to start island shopping or anything, but for someone like yourself who has taken a sincere interest in this area, it's a fine find imo, even if not a particularly valuable one.
Yeah, I may be a slow learner, but I love it. I am seeing lots of patterns now and figuring out the terms. It will take me time to learn all this stuff but I will eventually get there.
I don't believe you are, and certainly didn't wish to imply as much; my apologies if it read that way. There's a lot to learn amd recognizing it doesn't happen overnight is a big step imo, but I do believe you've doing just fine, and perhaps have even come along more than average in your time here.
You never implied! I did lol. I just admit that I am. You most certainly did not did not say nor imply that!
