1996 P Quarter, PMD?

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by dave new to coins, Oct 1, 2014.

  1. Hello. Yes, I'll take my flogging now. Any way this thing got mangled at the mint? It is a 96, not new. Don't know how to describe, but it looks like a line running from the R in liberty to the top of his head. When looking at it under magnifying glass, in hand, damage looks to have happened at very high temps(?) Not really sure, just curious before I mistakenly throw it into the recycle pile.

If I picked that up off the ground, I would say it's mostly post mint damage with a die crack running to the R.

  4. TY. So the R is not related to anything else. I wondered because there is a similar issue with the N on the reverse, and the gouges are strange. Then again, who knows what people do with these coins?

I call that "parking lot damage!" hehe! And when I get a coin that mangled, I don't bother looking for any errors!

  6. Fair enough. My usual fault, trying to find relationships where there are not any, as in, maybe it's all part of one incident. I will recycle. TY

Agreed, still an error, but not ever going to make you any money beyond fiat value.

  8. Appreciate. Not usually looking to sell, or expecting a lot of value. I've found several mint errors. I keep them for show and because I like them (considering selling 83 cud nickel), but if those gouges are pmd I don't want to look at, nor do I suspect anyone else would. Always worth a check if unsure. I've seen pictures of some fairly ugly, mangled mint errors. TY.

I'm no expert on errors, so don't necessarily take my word for it, that's just my inclination. There's just enough wear on the coin to make me think it happened outside the mint. If it was BU, then we'd have another discussion. I keep any coin I find that is or appears to be an error.

  10. Oh yea, loud and clear. I'm keeping it anyway, actually, what's another $0.25? Just won't have it with my "show and tell" coins, of which I hope to have many someday. Maybe I can make up a story about it to tell my grandkids, if I ever have any! Thanks again. peace.
