Hello All, Here is a 1996-P that is missing the plateing on the obverse, I found this going thru rolls.
I suspect some kind of discoloration, not missing plating. Why? Because the coin still shows "bubbles in the plating" in the area where the plating is supposedly missing.
The "bubbles" might instead be a series of die dents. At any rate, the pattern of exposure of the zinc around the periphery of the coin is consistent with a genuine error. The abnormally thin plating has split along the outer margins of letters and numbers.
When I looked at it, there was no doubt to me that it was real. It has that great dull grey color! My first thought was that the 'bubbles' might just be spots that circulated coins get for whatever reason. Regardless of what they are, very cool coin! I'm still looking for one of those.
