Hello, Still pretty new to looking for errors and I couldn't find anything on any error on 1996 D cents. But to me it looks like a A was struck on or before the R or possibly a crack. Let me know what y'all smart coin friends think.
The upper right portion of the R has been hit - so it's smashed in that area; not an A over the letter. Keep looking....sorry to be the bearer of bad news on it.
It's just an upside-down R that was squished. We call that a partial-squish because the whole letter isn't squished. But it's upside-down. But that's not a mint error, either. Turn the coin 180 degrees, you'll get it back to right-side up.
