What are you guys comments on the 1995 W silver eagle? I think this coin is way overrated with a mintage of 31000. I agree that this mintage figure is much lower than other years but still, how can one pay $3000 for it? If one look at mintage ratio's and prices of current eagles, this coin should not go for much more than a $1000. I guess a coin is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it.

I would rather take the $3000 and buy coins that is really rare with mintage figures below 6000.

Somebody was just talking about them last week. They were only sold with the 4 coin gold eagle sets. They weren't offered individually. So if you wanted one, you had to find somebody that was willing to break up their set.

I'm guessing not too many people did this so individual ones are likely much rarer than the mintage figure.

I would say that the American Silver Eagle series is one of the more popular series to collect in modern times. It is very easy to put together a very nice set at affordable prices, but for many people they don't consider their set complete without the 95W. Now a while back it was discussed on here whether or not you felt that your set was complete with or without the 95W.... and most agreed, including myself, that because the 95W was very limited and not actually minted as an individual piece, that it would not be considered part of the set. But there are many people out there that want this coin in order to complete the "whole" set. It is simply a supply and demand issue that is driving the price. More people want the coin than what is available so the price is up. If I had the extra cash, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I would not buy one at todays prices, but that's just me.
We all should have bought several when they came out.

If(and this is a big if) I had the spare cash I would buy 95W in a heart beat - just to finish the collection. But if I only had 3k to spend on coins then I would buy something older - they had a couple of nice 1799 bust dollars at the local shop yesterday.

this coin will reach $10,000.00 soon. the proof 70 is worth $35,000.00. and the most interesting thing is that only few sets will be two set holders or album for each sets. because the mint run out of set holder and gave temporary set holder for them. and later they received the original set holder again. i would said those people have tow set holder will command a big bonus or premium. i estimate around two hundreds. when you insert those coins in a temporary album. it became very very rare. who do you think have that two albums?. tell me.

you can't guage anything by the pf70 bogus amoungus grades...

$10,000 buys an awfully good Morgan or Colonial.

You are correct, there was a temp holder. I have one somewhere. It took the mint a few months to sent the second one.

Right you are William, I'd rather take all that dough and put it to better use buying other so called rare pieces. There are American commemorative pieces with similar mintage figures which do not command anywhere near that price. I guess it all boils down to one thing: whatever the market will bear (or is it bare).

    BTW, welcome to the forum......

    Thanks green18,

Thanks for the replies, after reading the thread I got a better understanding on why the 1995 W eagle is a rare coin and deserves the high price tag. I just started collecting US and Canadian coins after moving to Canada from South Africa. Here's some of my SA coins.

rld14, I guess all coins ever produced were modern at one time in history, slab them know while they are still in good condition, your grandchildren one day will be very glad you did so. :thumb:

Oh are these DOWN to around $3000 now? They were flirting in the $5000 range awhile back.

it is still in the range between $5,500.00 to $6,500.00 for a low quality set. and much much higher in the higher quality. because the gold proof set is commanding a good price right now.

I believe that the $5000 price range was for the 4 coin gold set plus the ASE and the $3000 price range was just for the 95W ASE.
