Haven't posted much lately... I've been hitting up the local auctions a lot lately. They've been keeping me pretty busy. I'm currently bidding on a 1995 series $5 with a gutter fold. The gutter extends from the top center of the reverse to the bottom right corner, giving it a nice top-to-bottom split that traverses half the bill horizonally as well. due to very light creasing, (center, vertical and horizontal) I give it around EF35.... The current bid is $50, and I'm tempted to go higher but am unable to find any kind of population report.... Has anyone seen any other 1995 series $5 gutter folds? If so, what did they sell for? Any help appreciated, thanks!
Can't say anything about the note you describe without pictures... but you can try search eBay Completed Auctions and, I'd advise more so, Heritage Auctions Archives to see what, if any, similar notes (same type of errors and similar grades) may come up for sale and sold for in the past. Post scans of your note if you win the one you wrote about.
Without scans It's hard but if you description is correct I think you would be safe up to the $100 mark for retail.
Oh I wouldn't go that high for a gutter fold on a note in VF-XF condition. My maximum would be $60, and that's only if i REALLY want the note. Generally error notes don't raise in price based on denomination. I'm sure you could find one in better condition for less if you looked.
pics added ok thanks for the input. I was thinking the same max Dr. Kegg, but just wanted to be sure it wasn't some kind of under-the-radar rarity. These local auctions are like a roller coaster... some expensive stuff goes for cheap, some common stuff goes for far too much. I enjoy the lack of competition, and some of the bids really make me wince (example: a copy 1860s $1000 confederate note given in cereal boxes as a promo in the 60s went for $55).
$50-$60 seems okay to me too having seen the condition of the note. Good luck with your bidding. Let us know how it ends, especially if you get outbid. It would be interesting to hear how high it went based on your other example.
WOW!! That's crazy for the condition of that gutter fold note. Did you get sucked into the hype of the bidding frenzy and buy it?
Did you buy it? I picked up this $1 with multiple gutter folds for around $40 so even though that was a $5, I think it was a little high.
nope not me... I used what I didn't spend on a 1910 2 Kroner from Norway. only 150,000 minted. got it for $81; less than half book value. Looks like I may get a 1935 series $1 star for $4.... some nice fractionals and authentic confederate $ on the block, national currency notes, a $5 1918 note I really want, some state notes from individual banks, some MPC's and "Bureau of Engraving and Printing Premium Historical Portfolio - A limited edition set of twenty's which is one of only 10,000" I may have to sacrifice it though to win the 1909 S Indian Head Cent I'm bidding on.
I saw, when considering bidding, that although these errors aren't exactly uncommon, there were NONE for sale or in ebay's completed listings that were 1995 OR a $5 note. Having discovered that, I thought I'd go $80, but when I went on to raise my bid it was already at 85... oh well.
